OH&S Management Systems

In NSW Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) is legislated by OH&S Act 2000 and OH&S Regulations 2001. NSW WorkCover ensures compliance through planned and random inspections including post incident investigations. Australian Standard AS/NZS 4801 specifies the requirements of OH&S Management Systems, while Australian Standard AS 4804 specifies the requirements of an OH&S Audit. In the ACT OH&S is legislated by the Safe Work Act 2008 and amendment A2009-28.

Insight Risk Assessment is able to assist employers with OH&S legislative compliance in a variety of ways, from an independent analysis of existing systems including site safety inspections, training and professional development of OH&S personnel, the development and implementation of safe work procedures and risk assessments, an OH&S audit and report through to OH&S Management System implementation.


OH&S Audits

OH&S Audits provide employers with the tools and information that, when adapted and implemented, will ensure legislative compliance, meet industry best practice standards and develop a culture of continuous improvement. Insight Risk Assessment OH&S Audits are conducted by qualified OH&S auditor’s in-line with Australian Standard 4801.

OH&S Audits are conducted against a set of 12 performance criteria:

  1. OH&S Policy: The Company has an OH&S policy that clearly states the CEO's commitment to the OH&S function, outlines responsibilities for all parties, and is clearly communicated to all staff.
  2. Management Responsibility: Performance agreements for executives and senior managers include statements of responsibility for OH&S.
  3. Planning Processes: The Company's planning processes include OH&S as a key objective supported by defined measurable outcomes.
  4. Consultation: There is a process in place for effective consultation on OH&S issues.
  5. Risk Management: Health and safety risks are systematically identified, assessed, eliminated or controlled and recorded on a continuous basis.
  6. Information, Instruction and Training: There is a process in place for providing information, instruction and training for all staff on OH&S issues.
  7. Injury Treatment and Management: There is a process in place for the effective treatment and management of injuries.
  8. Claims Management: There is a process in place for the timely and effective management of workers compensation claims.
  9. Incident Recording, Investigation, Analysis and Review: There is a process in place to record, investigate, analyse and review all workplace related incidents and outcomes made available to key stakeholders in the Annual Report.
  10. Measuring and Evaluating OH&S Performance: There is a process in place to measure and evaluate the ongoing performance of the OH&S management system.
  11. Reviewing OH&S Performance: Reviews of OH&S performance feed into the planning processes of the Company.
  12. CEO Reporting: The CEO is informed of, and regularly updated on, the Company’s OH&S performance.

OH&S Management Systems

Insight Risk Assessment’s experienced OH&S professionals have developed our proprietary OH&S Management System in-line with Australian Standard 4801. While tailored to meet the needs of individual workplaces, the system addresses each of the 12 performance criteria identified in the OH&S audit. Insight Risk Assessment recommends the implementation of a new OH&S Management System over a 12 month period, with regular remote and on-site reviews to ensure management and employee commitment and ongoing continuous improvement.

An OH&S Management System is essentially a way of managing OH&S through individually designed policies and procedures. Through the development of a tailored OH&S Management System, employers make a commitment to:

  • protect the health and safety of their employees and other people in or near the workplace
  • ensure the health and safety of employees at work when using, handling, storing or transporting plant and substances
  • ensure compliance with legislative and employer legal responsibilities

The following components may be incorporated into a company’s OH&S Management System. Insight Risk Assessment is also able to deliver these services independently, including employee training and awareness education, as required by each workplace.

Task Analysis System (TAS) - Duties Database

TAS records and retrieve information regarding employment positions such as; physical capacity, lifting/carrying, equipment, safety equipment, sensory, psychosocial, chemical hazards, working environment, risk factors and biological hazards.

The program assists in the management of workplace injuries through the rapid identification of suitable duties, improved communication with the nominated treating doctor, rapid implementation of a return to work plan, quicker worker recovery and better return to work outcomes.

Using TAS helps to prevent workplace injuries by assisting in the selection of the right candidate for each employment position and by ensuring pre-employment assessments are accurate and non-discriminatory.

Ergonomic Workstation Assessment

An ergonomic assessment involves the evaluation of a workstation and the physical environment and its interaction with the employee. An Ergonomic Assessment Report contains recommendations for optimal improvements in:

  • Ergonomic workstation set up & lighting
  • Ease of movement / clutter
  • Optimal heights and angles for equipment
  • Posture
  • Rest breaks and stretches

Workplace Risk Assessment Training

Workplace risk assessment training is designed to assist employers improve the understanding of their employees regarding the risk assessment process, whilst developing a culture of ongoing risk identification by all employees. Training aims to improve an employees ability to identify risks, to implement practices, to understand the likelihood of accidents and improve understanding regarding the consequences of accidents in the workplace. The regulations of 2000 provide a hierarchy of risk identification, control and elimination. Risk Assessment Training aims to provide the knowledge and skills needed to conduct a Risk Assessment and to eliminate or minimise workplace risks.
